IBM Joins Container Data Center Fray…

June 11, 2008

Today IBM Announced their container strategy as part of their “Green” Initiative.   They join the growing ranks of  Verari, Rackable, and Sun in adopting data center and compute solutions into shipping containers.  There has also been mention that DELL and HP are preparing entries into this market as well. To date, most of the container-related deployments have been used for flexibile capacity expansion or bringing computer resources to areas where traditional data center construction might be more difficult.   This announcement along with a modular approach to data center construction seem to indicate a growing trend in data center designs.   IBM is making the claim that Containers are “Green” while Microsoft, perhaps the largest adopter of this technology says that while it is more cost efficient, containers are not for every one.  I guess time will tell!
