Rumor: Yahoo Data Centers considering Omaha?
July 14, 2008On the heels of yet another rebuttal to Microsoft, word is now leaking about a possible Yahoo Data Center in or around Omaha, Nebraska. While specifics are very sketchy at this point, the local word is that Yahoo is seriously considering the Omaha area for a new facility. To those in the know of such things, this would place them very close to the Google Data Center in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Presumably its for the same economic drivers (power costs, etc) that Google decided to locate in the area. However, might it also signal of closer ties between companies? The addition of a Yahoo facility to Omaha would be a huge win for the town, clearly putting in on the map in terms of Data Center site selection.
Yahoo has followed others for its data center locations before, the best example being its move to build a data center near Microsoft in Quincy, Washington. It will however be the first time anyone has located near a Google facility. This is definitely a story we will have to keep our eyes on.
Yahoo might be the first one
Nebraska put out a lot of incentives to attract more data centers. Those incentives beat the incentives from other states by far. The problem is that most people dont kow about the incentives. And lets face it, cheap power (3-4cents/kwh) Cheap labor pool and no major natural threats..
I can provide more info, if anyone needs it..
