Google Miami Data Center – A change in the winds?

August 27, 2008

Data Center Knowledge is reporting that Google is expanding its Miami data center facilities.   What is most interesting to me is that this is a very interesting announcement.   As has been reported many times, Google has moved to full construction efforts across the world.   Goose Greek South Carolina, Lenior, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Iowa, and Belgium have all had some level of fanfare.  All of these facilities have been self-constructed.   While it has been widely known for some time that Google has had a significant amount of capacity in colocation spaces around the world, I do find it somewhat strange that this announcement is effectively a public lease extension.

Could Google be receiving pressure to reduce Capital spending?  Miami is known as one of the best locations for connecting to South America and Mexico and its obvious to me that this is the market they are targeting with this announcement.     I have a strange sensation that Google’s shareholders are starting pressure for better capital management.
